Modehuset is heritage listed (green-classified), which means its original architectural elements must not be altered. However, with respect for the building’s history, careful changes are now being proposed to open the house up to its surroundings.
An architectural landmark with a new pulse
In the heart of Marievik rises one of the area’s most iconic buildings – Modehuset, originally designed by architects Axelsson and Borowski and constructed between 1987 and 1991. With its distinctive façade of mirrored glass, steel, and terrazzo, the building has become a visual hub, reflecting the sky, water, and greenery. Its monumental architecture is clearly visible from both Liljeholmsbron and the park, giving the place a unique character.
Originally, Modehuset was built as a department store for fashion wholesalers. Today, it is home to companies such as H&M, but the future holds even greater visions. As part of the development of Marievik, Marge Arkitekter has been commissioned to carry Modehuset into the future – with respect for its history and character.

En varsam förvandling
It involves, among other things, replacing the dark mirrored glass on the ground floor with clear glass to create a stronger connection between indoors and outdoors. In addition, more greenery is planned for the forecourt, contributing to a more vibrant streetscape.
The ground floor will also become home to Stockholm’s new live stage, as well as cafés, restaurants, and shops – a transformation that turns Modehuset into a destination for both culture and food.
